Guide to Backlinks for SEO

What are Backlinks

Okay, If you are a seasoned professional at Search Engine Optimization (SEO) then this article will be of little value to you. However, if you are just now taking your baby steps on generating revenue from online methods then this article will be crucial to your understanding of the value of quality backlinks.

If you're just starting out, you will see terms like: backlink, backlinks, quality backlinks, high Page Rank backlinks. And you'll be thinking, "what the heck is a backlink?" Simply put, you can think of a backlink as a directional pointer to your web site or article, or whatever you are promoting.

Some backlinks carry more weight than others and then some carry no weight at all. It all depends on where you place the link and the type of link you are placing. Some links will generate targeted traffic. Targeted traffic comes from people that search for your keywords on the search engines and find your link embedded in an article, blog , or forum post.

Some links carry what the SEO guru's call Google Juice. Links with Google Juice are those that are placed in publicly viewable profiles on High PR (Page Rank) sites. For example, Hubpages has a Page Rank (PR) of 6 and allows us to create a profile and place backlinks inside the text. When the search engines do what they do, they send a spider that crawls the profile and notes the backlink and credits it to the targeted site as being worthy of a PR6 site, therefore giving it Google Juice.

Then there are those links that carry no weight at all with the search engines but that does not mean they are worthless. Links that carry no search engine weight are those that are tagged "no-follow." The "nofollow" tag simply tells the search engine spiders that, yes there is a link to another site here but the current site is not endorsing the targeted site. That's not to say that sites that have the "do-follow" tag endorse the targeted sites, they only endorse the member that is posting the backlink.

These "no-follow" backlinks can have value if you are an active member or contributing member of a site and build community relationships with other members. If your fellow members become friends or fans then they can likely send traffic to your profile which will have the link pointing to whatever you are promoting.

Where to get Backlinks

Getting backlinks is not that hard, it is time consuming which makes it a challenge for people with limited time. If you read my hub on the Easiest ways to get backlinks, you would know that it only takes time. You're results are reflected by your effort.. Another good source for finding backlinks was written by fellow Hubber, Sunstreeks. You can really see her efforts pay off.

Okay, I must be crazy but I'm going to give you a small list of places where you can place a backlink. This list is a list that I created. Similar lists are selling on sites like the Warrior Forum at $20 a pop. These are self discovered sites and I have backlinks on them myself.

When you go to each of these sites, you will have to resgister as a member and confirm your membership through an email responder. Once you are confirmed, you will be allowed to create a membership profile. Inside the profile, you can place an anchor text that points to whatever you are promoting. If you are unfamilliar with what an anchor text is, look above at the blue colored links. Those are anchor texts that I have pointing at mine and Sunstreeks hubs.

Blogs and article directories and many of the sites I listed above require HTML for placing links.Forums mostly require BB code and Wiki's require something entirely different. But all of them generally allow anchored text when it comes to backlinks.

How to SEO Blog Categories and Improve Search Rankings

Categories can be great for usability, however many a blogger has lost valuable search rankings, thus blog traffic, to poorly optimized categories. So what to do with those pesky categories?

Some bloggers (myself included) have often used a drop down menu for categories to prevent duplicate content issues. However, there is a much better way which can help elevate your blogs search rankings.

Domain Authority vs. PageRank

Domain authority: A collection of metrics which measures the overall importance of the entire domain. Some of these metrics include site age, number of other domains linking to the domain, and number of trusted domains linking to the domain. However, the benefits of domain authority dissipate three levels down (more on this later).
PageRank: Its just what it sounds like, the actual rank or authority of the actual page. On most sites the home page has the most inbound links and the most PageRank. The more pages with high PageRank link to a page, internally or externally, determine each pages PageRank.

Google assumes that the most important pages of a website will always be within three clicks of the home page. With each click, domain authority dissipates slightly, and on the fourth click it completely disappears.

If the home page of the blog links to recent posts, those ten recent posts benefit from domain authority. The home page will also link to a page containing the previous ten posts. Those ten posts will also benefit from the domain authority. The third page back of posts will also benefit, however the posts on that page will receive no benefit. So, in a typical blog, only 20 actual posts benefit from domain authority!

Keep in mind though, those pages are benefiting from some PageRank still passed around your site. Here are a few tricks to leverage your domain authority and improve PageRank flow

Getting maximum authority to as many pages as possible

Display your categories on the sidebar of the blog with plain text links. Dont use javascript or drop down boxes.
Create as many categories as possible without alienating your visitors. As a matter of fact, your visitors will probably find it helpful.
Never nofollow category links
Try to list each post in only one category
Use noindex, follow on all category pages

Just because a page is not indexed does not stop Google from passing domain authority and PageRank through it to links on the page. So, in effect the category page simply becomes a bridge between two points that allows for the passage of powerful authority to the important pages without risk of duplicate content issues.

By creating 20 categories with ten posts in each category, the effect of the domain authority effect is increased from 20 pages to 200 pages.

Link building is that dreaded phrase that still to this day confuses the heck out of many people trying to figure out how to proactively market themselves online in the search engines. They hear from one source how they need thousands of links to start ranking and from another source they hear just quality links gets the job done. So what is the right answer? In a perfect world you would have an abundance of good quality links pointing from only a variety of targeted authority industry websites.

Just building links for the sake of building links is not going to benefit you or the search engines. Links that sit on irrelevant websites can actually hurt you a great deal over time. A link sitting a website that is part of a blog farm is not going to benefit you in any possible way. If you are not sure what a blog farm is, it is a farm of blogs that a company will use to place links for clients or other websites in order to increase rankings.

These blog farms usually have absolutely no strength or power in the search engines but appear to do so. Dont assume that spending more money is going to get you more quality links. It is not about how much you spend but more so about how good your marketing message is. A promotion that gets your audience talking and bloggers writing will get you much farther than just purchasing a link on a website.

Many different businesses take a variety of different approaches in the search engine marketing industry but purchasing links is very frowned upon. Buying a service that generates thousands of links for you is only going to create a mess of your online marketing approach and hurt you in the long run. How good do you really think those thousand links are going to be? Do you think they generate any value to your business?

Link building should always be done with a quality approach. A blog post on an industry related blog that is an authority in your industry is an example of a great link. A major business publication doing a write up on you for their online division is a great link. A directory blaster is a horrible way to generate links and should be avoided at all costs. Link building should be conducted using a strategy and a schedule and not with a number goal. A combination of a variety of monthly efforts is an approach that will help you climb in the search results over time.

You should not think it's not google adsense, just get code and put to website then sleep and money will incoming to you. Mistaken! So, Is Google Adsense better than ?

I will not tell about my opinion at this topic, i just tell what is fact. Google Adsense easy to use, you just signup, get code and put into your website. All you need is traffic and real visitor who was interest your content.

If you run a website or blog, then you are likely at risk of being hacked. There are people all over the world that take great pleasure in hacking sites just for the fun of it. Sometimes it is for monetary gain, but most of the time it's strictly for bragging rights. There are hundreds of ways to get hacked, and no way to see it coming. There are however, many ways to make it difficult to hack your website. Most of the time sites are hacked because the owners have not taken the proper precautions to avoid it from happening.

Being hacked is never fun. It is even worse when you are not prepared for (which in most cases, you won't be). It tends to happen the most when the website owner is not ready. Make sure that you use a reputable hosting company, and stay away from shared hosting if you run a large website or blog. If you are serious about your website, you may want to consider some sort of enterprise cloud hosting solution or a dedicated server. A dedicated server will not be necessary unless you run a very large website, or lots of websites that get a good amount of traffic.

Checking your folders and files permissions is an important step. If you do not know how to do this, then make sure you have an expert check it out. Hire someone that knows what they are doing to look into your website and make sure all of the proper measures are taken on the technical side of things to avoid being hacked. Most web programmers that are tech savvy will do a good job with this type of stuff. Take the time to learn about hosting and servers along with file permissions and .htaccess. There are also a lot of different database related stuff that you will want to look into. Hiring an expert will kill all of these birds with one stone, and this is nothing that will cost you an arm and a leg.

The bottom line, is that being hacked is not fun and you now have the tools you need to avoid this type of security risk. Take the time to implement what you just read. It could save your entire website network.
